Trump and Pompeo on Three Issues: Paris, Iran and North Korea.
Mir Alikhan | counterpunch.org | 2018-03-20
The most noteworthy and shocking sign of disorder in Trump's bureaucracy has now manifested in the State Department. Its enervated head, Rex Tillerson, former CEO of ExxonMobil, has been forced out in the face of "profound disagreements with the president on policy," including the Paris climate accord, the Iranian nuclear deal, and the denuclearization of…

Cancer, George Monbiot and Nuclear Weapons Test Fallout.
Chris Busby | counterpunch.org | 2018-03-20
George Monbiot, who has now been diagnosed with prostate cancer at the young age of 55, was therefore born in 1963, at the peak of the atmospheric test fallout. He is thus a peak exposed (at risk) member of a cohort of those exposed in the womb to the fallout (1959-63) and currently suffering the consequences of exposure to Strontium-90 in the milk, and (measured) in the childrens' bones.

Don't Believe the Media Hype About Saudi Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.
Medea Benjamin, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-19
Beneath the veneer of reform is a young man who believes he deserves absolute power. | Saudi Arabia's 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, heir to the Saudi throne after eliminating his rivals, is on a two-week whirlwind visit to the United States starting March 19. He plans to cement his ties to the Trump administration, shore up support for his war in Yemen while whipping up more opposition to Iran, and make lucrative business deals. From political meetings with Donald Trump and Congress to cultural events at DC's Kennedy Center, a talk at MIT, gatherings with tech leaders in Silicon Valley and oil executives in Houston, the prince will be selling dolled-up versions of both his repressive kingdom and his favorite product from the House of Saud: himself. But don't get sucked into the media hype, seeded by well-paid PR firms, that. . .

U.S., S. Korea, Japan Discuss Denuclearization and Summits.
Staff | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-03-19
SEOUL, South Korea–Top U.S., South Korean and Japanese officials discussed how to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula during weekend talks ahead of upcoming inter-Korean and U.S.-North Korean summits, Seoul said Monday. | South Korean officials who visited Pyongyang recently say North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to hold talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in late April. Seoul says Kim proposed meeting with President Donald Trump, who agreed to meet him by the end of May. | The developments have raised hopes for a potential breakthrough in the North Korean nuclear crisis. But many experts say animosities would flare again if the summits fail to produce any progress and leave the nuclear issue with few diplomatic options. The Strategy of Tension Towards Russia and the Push to Nuclear War.

The United States has devised on ongoing strategy of tension towards Russia. Bush Is Gone, but the Neocons Are Back.
Jefferson Morley, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-17
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signals a coming confrontation with Iran. | Once upon a time there were hopes that Donald Trump as president might pursue a different kind of American foreign policy; call it non-interventionist, or isolationist, or transactional. He certainly broke with conventional Washington discourse. When the foreign policy establishment of Washington almost unanimously urged President Obama in September 2013 to punish the Syrian government for a chemical gas attack, Trump tweeted, "Do not attack Syria" three times in two days. Trump denounced previous administrations, Democratic and Republican, for casting America as the "policeman of the world. " He criticized President George W. Bush even more harshly than many liberal critics did. "Bush murdered thousands of r troops & wasted trillions $ in a needless & senseless war-Iraq. TRUE! " Trump tweeted during the campaign. Robert Reich: The Menace of Mad King Donald.
Robert Reich, RobertReich.org | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-17
An unconstrained Trump could order an attack on North Korea, precipitating a nuclear war. | Trump is moving into a new and more dangerous phase. Before, he was constrained by a few "adults" — Rex Tillerson, Gary Cohn, H. R. McMaster, and John Kelly — whom he appointed because he thought they had some expertise he lacked. Now he's either fired or is in the process of removing the adults. He's replacing them with a Star Wars cantina of toadies and sycophants who will reflect back at him his own glorious view of himself, and help sell it on TV. Narcissists are dangerous because they think only about themselves. Megalomaniacs are dangerous because they think only about their power and invincibility. A narcissistic megalomaniac who's unconstrained — and who's also president of the United States — is about as dangerous as they come. The man who once. . .

U.S.-Russia Nuclear Arms Racing: Still Crazy After All These Years.
Andrew Lichterman | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-03-16
President Vladimir Putin's major address on March 1 to Russia's Federal Assembly was candid about the economic and social challenges facing Russians. What attracted attention in the United States, however, was a detailed description, complete with video animations, of an array of new nuclear weapons delivery systems, including a nuclear-powered cruise missile and an underwater drone. | A month earlier, on Feb. 2, the Trump administration released its Nuclear Posture Review. The review's assessment of prospects for U.S.-Russian nuclear arms control is grim. It proposes two new capabilities, both aimed at Russia, a low-yield warhead deployed on submarine-launched missiles, and a sea-based, nuclear-armed cruise missile. It also endorses existing plans to sustain and upgrade existing nuclear forces and infrastructure to the tune of well over a trillion dollars over the next three decades. | While not as sensational as the weapons…

Is the U.S. Trying to Start a Hot War with Syria?
Vijay Prashad, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-15
Fishy claims about the use of chemical weapons could provide the pretext for the U. S. to bomb Damascus. | It had appeared at the start of this year that the possibility of an American attack on Syrian government targets– a serious possibility in 2013 and 2014–was now off the table. It appeared that the Syrian government, with Russian and Iranian support, would soon take the last remaining strongholds of the opposition, now mainly reduced to one form of extremist or another. The capture of Aleppo, Syria's largest city, was the sign of the turnaround. Each time the Syrian government forces encircled the opposition, largely extremist fighters, it would cut a deal and send them off to the province of Idlib in the north of Syria. Iran: Crackdown on Dervish Minority.
Human Rights Watch | Human Rights Watch News | 2018-03-15
(Beirut) — Iranian authorities arrested over 300 members of the minority Dervish Muslim community in late February 2018 after police forcibly tried to break up a protest. The events in February stemmed from what appears to be an intensified crackdown on the Dervish minority, including likely ramped-up surveillance of the group's leader. | Police Forces at the scene of the clashes, Tehran, Iran February 19,2018. | © 2018 Majzooban-e-Noor | The ensuing clashes left dozens of people injured and at least three police officers and one Basij member dead. The Dangers Of Diplomacy, Trump-Style.
Joe Conason, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-14
He's destroying our hope for progress with Iran and North Korea. | This planet just became a more perilous place to live. It may not have seemed so last week, when Donald Trump agreed to meet Kim Jong Un for negotiations over North Korea's nuclear arsenal. Trump's abrupt diplomatic offer was certainly an improvement on his jeering, boasting and threatening on Twitter — even if he doesn't understand that he gave away exactly what the dictator wanted most, without getting anything in return. The prospect of talks is almost always preferable to the possibility of war, which is why previous presidents consistently sought ways to engage the hereditary despots in Pyongyang. The difference is that those presidents also knew enough not to approve any discussion without adequate preparation, let alone the total absence of rational planning and knowledgeable staff. Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists SEOUL, South Korea—Top U.S., South Korean and Japanese officials discussed how to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula during weekend talks ahead of upcoming inter-Korean and U.S.-North Korean summits, Seoul said Monday. Jefferson Morley, AlterNet (2018-03-17). Bush Is Gone, but the Neocons Are Back. AlterNet.org Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signals a coming confrontation with Iran. Robert Reich, RobertReich.org (2018-03-17). Robert Reich: The Menace of Mad King Donald. AlterNet.org An unconstrained Trump could order an attack on North Korea, precipitating a nuclear war. The man who once. . .

Andrew Lichterman (2018-03-16). U.S.-Russia Nuclear Arms Racing: Still Crazy After All These Years. Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists President Vladimir Putin's major address on March 1 to Russia's Federal Assembly was candid about the economic and social challenges facing Russians.

Vijay Prashad, AlterNet (2018-03-15). Is the U.S. Trying to Start a Hot War with Syria? AlterNet.org Fishy claims about the use of chemical weapons could provide the pretext for the U. S. to bomb Damascus. | As if out of nowhere, a Russian general announces that if the United States strikes Central Damascus (Syria) with an aerial attack, the Russians would retaliate. It had appeared at the start of this year that the possibility of an American attack on Syrian government targets— a serious possibility in 2013 and 2014—was now off the table. It appeared that the Syrian government, with Russian and Iranian support, would soon take the last remaining strongholds of the opposition, now mainly reduced to one form of extremist or another. The capture of Aleppo, Syria's largest city, was the sign of the turnaround. Jacob Sugarman, AlterNet (2018-03-15). 6 Reasons We Should All Hope Trump Doesn't Add John Bolton to His Cabinet. AlterNet.org The president's rumored replacement for H. R. McMaster is an Islamophobic ultrahawk. | Earlier this week, Donald Trump tapped a charter member of the Tea Party to lead the State Department and an established torturer to head the CIA. Both appointments were perfectly monstrous, but if there is a governing law of this administration, it's that things can always get worse. Consider the president's rumored replacement for national security adviser H. R. McMaster: According to multiple outlets, Trump has met with John Bolton at the White House and could offer him the position as early as next week. That the former U. S. ambassador to the United Nations has the president's ear at all should be a cause for concern. Over the course of his checkered career, Bolton has proven himself a hawk of the first order, enthusiastically endorsing the. . .

While Tillerson was happily gutting the State Department, his relationship with President Trump was deteriorating for a variety of reasons. Joe Conason, AlterNet (2018-03-14). The Dangers Of Diplomacy, Trump-Style. AlterNet.org He's destroying our hope for progress with Iran and North Korea. Only a figure as arrogantly. . .
